The Doge meme is an interior monologue pasted, in Comic Sans, over a photograph of Kabosu, a Shiba Inu belonging to Atsuko Sato of Sakura, Japan. Dogecoin did not invent the dog. It incorporated her the way a maison incorporates a founder’s initials: until the initials are the product.
The animal
Kabosu was a real dog with a real owner. The internet’s use of her face is a long unauthorized derivative work that Sato sometimes blessed, sometimes endured, and that outlived the animal. She died in 2025. The ticker did not.
The 2013 captions — “such wow”, “very currency”, “much coin” — are not illiteracy. They are a style: a mind that cannot quite grammar its own astonishment. Palmer put that style on a homepage. Markus put it on a client. Every later seriousness, including this site, is downstream of that typesetting joke.
Why we will not typeset Comic Sans
Suchdoginals records the meme and declines to reenact it. The original page is heritage. A 2026 pastiche would be costume. That is an editorial choice, not a claim that Dogecoin was ever solemn.
