An indexer is a program that reads every Dogecoin block, reconstructs shibe identity, detects inscription envelopes, and applies metaprotocol rules. Wallets and markets are its clients. Dogecoin Core is not. This is the least glamorous article on this site and the one that actually governs ownership.

The job

Without an indexer you can still inscribe: you broadcast a P2SH spend whose redeem script starts with ord. You cannot, with confidence, transfer a Doginal or know a DRC-20 balance. Documentation from the DRC-20 lineage is blunt: without a working indexer you can inscribe and not transfer.

A complete indexer needs a subsidy table for the first ~145,000 blocks, a UTXO trail for every numbered shibe, envelope parsers including multipart and chained inscriptions, and a DRC-20 state machine with first-seen-wins. Miss any layer and you mint a parallel universe.

Lineages we currently record

  • Genesis / Shibescription #0 indexers (including the Doge Labs public lineage): March 2023 DOGI at 21 million is first-seen.
  • May-start indexers: ignore the spring; a 2.1 billion dogi (often DOGIM in UI) becomes the teachable ticker.
  • Cardinals: a different inscription protocol, not a Doginals dialect.

Maestro and other commercial APIs later exposed Dogecoin metaprotocol queries (for example DRC-20 balances by address). An API is not a standard. It is a convenient window onto one notebook.

Questions

Which indexer is official?

None. Official would mean Dogecoin consensus. Choose the lineage your counterparty’s wallet uses, or do not trade.
